Just as the Web revolutionized the way we shop, so has the introduction of the subscription box trend. A few years ago, some small companies emerged, claiming that they could send you high-end beauty samples or full-size products for a … Continue reading

Wantable ~ June 2013

20130626_173827_resized

Call me the beauty blogger of subscription boxes, but I always get an adrenaline rush when I know a surprise box filled with makeup, hair and body products are arriving! I love snacks (well, food in general) and working out (these two seem to contradict each other, oops!) but trying new products, and getting ones I love from renowned brands is my specialty.

So where am I going with this? The Wantable Beauty Box subscription of course! Wantable is a subscription box company that allows you to choose between two different options: beauty or jewelry and accessories. For me, a no brainer, I want all the mascara and lipstick in the world! And so Wantable was lovely enough to send me a complimentary box to review… so here we go!

First look: Always my favorite part- I love companies that use cute packaging!

They include an invoice that shows your preferences as well as shipping and contact info in case you would like to return anything. One of the great things about this company is that if you are not satisfied, you can return the items!

The items I received were:

Lise Watier Eyebrow Essentials in Brunette: A two-tone palette of brown eyebrow powder to use to fill in this brows, and add definition! I love the case it comes in, a classy metal snap-close case, along with a brush to use. I definitely will be using the lighter shade, but the dark one will have to wait until the wintertime.

At first I started jumping up and down thinking this was liquid eyeliner (my life staple!) and then I steadied for a second and began to read the packaging.. hmm Manna Kadar Transfix Eyeliner. I was thoroughly confused for a good few minutes until I realized that you use this formula and brush to turn dry eyeshadow into liquid eyeliner! Mind blown. Now I have a use for the crazy weird eyeshadows I’ve been getting in gold, purple and blue.

I really liked the packaging for the Besame Cosmetics Classic Color Lipstick in Coral. The little bag made it special and seem like a prized possession while the box reminded me of old-school, classy Paris. I actually don’t have any lipsticks or glosses that are coral-colored so I’m intrigued to give this one a try!

This Cala Retractable Blush Brush is great! It feels like a good-quality brush, and it has it’s own case/cover to slip it back down into so you don’t get powder all over your bag. I may end up using it for foundation since it’s on the bigger side, but my current brush is getting a bit old, so I will definitely be using this.

I’ll be honest, I don’t really do sparkly or shimmery nail polish (which I’m pretty sure I marked as a dislike) and so when I saw that I got the Rainbow Honey Nail Lacquer in Pink Cloud (a pink glittery polish), I was kinda bummed. When looking at some other bloggers boxes, I wish I had received the EcoTools false eyelashes or FACE Stockholm Volumizing Mascara (or even one of the other polishes, like the skinny white bottle I’ve been seeing), however Lara Eurdolian (creator and curator) and the Wantable crew did well with the rest of the items and I give them props for that. I’ll find a friend who enjoys glitter more than myself so that she can enjoy the polish.

Finally, there was a Apothederm Serum Sample (with Gift Card) which is a good size to try out the firming serum, and if I do end up liking it, I get $25 off any purchase of $75 or more.

For $36 per month (or $40 one-time buy) I think this box was well worth it, and if you don’t agree, at least you can send it back or change up your beauty profile. Sign up by clicking my link here!

What’s on my…. July 2nd ~ Best Self Tanners and Upcoming Subscription Box Reviews!

What’s on my mind:

Pink Nails

I can’t believe the weekend is over already! I had a successful spa weekend that consisted of hitting the gym, a manicure (getting new acrylic tips~~ see above!), getting an eyebrow wax, going shopping, and starting to get packed and ready for my vacation, which begins tomorrow night! Eeek!

I just went out and did a drugstore run to make sure I was fully stocked up with shampoo, conditioner, makeup, and of course, Sunscreen! (which you’ll see why this is so important below)

What’s on my body:

Aloe, lots of it. Why do you ask? Because I foolishly let myself get burnt to a crisp trying to get a nice base tan before my vacation. I know, so dumb, especially with all the articles about proper sun and skin care and how drastic a sunburn can affect your skin and possibility for cancers. And so, here is my list of favorite self-tanners, because those are all I’m going to be using for a while!

I have always been a huge fan of the gradual self-tanners, like Jergens Perfect Glow and L’Oreal Sublime Bronze. They recently re-vamped their formulas to smell better, go on easier, and last longer!

Sublime Bronze

I just purchased and used the L’Oreal Sublime Bronze Lotion and Misting Spray (I usually get the gradual tanner lotion but I decided to go for the straight-up self tanner this time). Both the Self-Tanner Lotion and Aerosol Spray are effective, and give you a nice glow without looking like an Oopma Loompa. Just be careful to shave and exfoliate before hand, and to go easy around your elbows, knees, wrists and ankles or else they will be 2 shades darker than the rest of your body. For under $12 a pop, these are my favorites when I want to get glowing in a day! Depending on your activities, it could last up to a week! Personally, I apply the self-tanner about 2x per week, as I do go to the gym a few times per week. If you’re the type of person who goes into the ocean/goes to the beach 5 days a week, you may need to re-apply more often because of the salt water and sand rubbing it off. I’m going to use the Spray version to refresh/touch up my tan tomorrow,  so I’ll let you know if I recommend one over the other. I would not use the tan-towels version- suuuper streaky!

Jergens 3 Day

Jergens now has a 3-day ‘super’ formula that is supposed to make you gradually tanner in less time than normal! I tried this one a few weeks ago, and think it’s definitely a great product and you get the same results from applying 2x than with the regular formula you have to apply it approx. 4 times for the same result. The only downside to this product is that it’s the same price (give or take) as the normal gradual self tanner, however it’s a smaller bottle so you need to purchase it more often to maintain your tan.

Each of these companies do make separate face tanners for those of you with oily or acne-prone skin. I don’t buy them that often, but it is a nice option to have if the regular lotions are too ‘oily’ for your more delicate skin and clog your pores.

Now, if you want to talk the pricier, overnight bronze goddess formulas, I’ll point you in the direction of St. Tropez (Self Bronzing Lotion or Mousse- $40), Beautisol Summer Glow ($40) or Fake Bake ($25-35) . But please, exfoliate and wear either gloves or a mitt with these, or else your hands will be brown for days! And put down old sheets on your bed so you don’t ruin your nice stuff with brown goo! PLUS: I just found out the hard way, that these formulas (the direct tanners/not gradual tanning lotions) that while they are the best hands down for flawless application and that perfect glow, after a while they do go bad. I reently opened up my cabinet to see which I still had left to use, and when I began to pour it out, it was this EMERALD-MOSSY GREEN COLOR! So, if you’re going to spend the cash to buy it, please make sure you use it within 6 months or so.
