A Kitchen Box ~ August 2013

image

A Kitchen Box is supposed to be that ‘little helper’ in the kitchen. It’s not an all-out food box to make dinner, nor just a kitchen tool box, but instead if meant to inspire you. They create a theme, and send you recipe cards and correlating tools to use, so that with your own produce and personality, you can create what you enjoy.

image

I received what they call The Cocktail Box, a box curated to prep you for all different kinds of cocktail making ($34.95) It came with quite a variety of items that I wasn’t 100% sure what it was for, until I noticed a few distinct items… like the Tabasco sauce!

The thought popped into my mind: Bloody Marys. But then… why is there a citrus reamer? And then I imagined the possibilities of drinks I could make using the reamer and the muddler: Mojitos, Caprihanas, Fresh Lemonade, and so on…

image

So, you want to see everything!? Okay, here we go…

I opened up the box to this cute tissue paper and information card, that on one side is a Thank You for your order, and the other side lists the items included. There is a music download, a few postcards, and then the kitchen-related items.

image\

Here are all the postcard and recipe cards included! One shows a recipe for a Bloody Mary, another for Ginger Beer, and a few other exciting finds.

image

So, I saw this delicately wrapped up item and immediately was intrigued as to what it could be…

image

After unwrapped the ribbon and paper, I saw that, simple enough, they were Bamboo Cocktail Picks! Perfect for putting olives or fruit on!

image

Next up, I got a baseball bat! Woooo… oh no, just kidding. I got a wooden muddler (which, if needed could serve as a bat) and is used for mashing up items like mint leaves, limes and other fruits/food items for drinks. When you order a Mojito, they always mash up the mint and lime together to let the flavors emerge, and then add in sugar, soda and alcohol.

image

Here’s a wooden citrus reamer, which can go hand in hand with making the previous drink. It’s used for squeezing all the liquid out of citrus fruits like lemons, limes, oranges and grapefruits. I use one all the time to make fresh-squeezed lemonade.

image

Then you can see my tiny little Tabasco Sauce! (Loving my nail color here… even though it only lasted 5 days). I love hot sauce, and although I am not a huge fan of Bloody Marys, I will definitely use it to add a kick to my meals.

image

Then.. there was a little brown bag package, all tied up with string and a card with a quote by Julia Child that read “Everything in moderation… including moderation.” I just love it! So of course, now I wanted to know what was inside the package.

image

Two little plastic packs of seasonings labeled “Lemon-Ginger Finishing Salt” and “Rogue’s Heavenly Blue Finishing Salt” by Salinity were inside. I can definitely see myself using the lemon-ginger salt on the rim of a margarita, and apparently the “Heavenly Blue” is a blue-cheese hinted salt, so I have yet to come up with an idea for that one.

image

For $89, you can get a quarterly subscription which includes 3 months/3 boxes. Plus, they donate $1 from the sale of every box to an Oregon based nonprofit called Children of Kenya, changing the lives of children.

image

So here’s the whole haul, on the soft white towel that was also included in the box! I definitely like the mix of items, however I wish that there was something else pulling it all together, like a cocktail glass, or powder drink mix… just a little something extra. However I do recommend it to any of my foodie fans out there.

PeachDish ~ A Cooking Experience ~ August

PeachDish is a brand new company, led by CEO and Founder Hadi Irvani, that wants to help making cooking easier and more fun for you! For only $20 per week/shipment, they send you the ingredients and recipes to create a 3-course-meal for 2 people! Yeah, for only $20! Many other companies start at $40 per meal, if not more, and usually come with just one or two main courses.

Peachdish

Since PeachDish is a new company, they only offer one option at the moment: a surprise 3-course-meal, shipped once per month. However, as they have plans to expand, they will begin to allow you to customize your order (perhaps choose 1 out of 3 options, or something along those lines). They ship out of Tuesdays, so they generally arrive on Wednesday or Thursday, all ready for you to start cooking! Plus, if you’re out of town, you can delay your shipping so it doesn’t arrive and rot on your doorstep, and you can cancel anytime. Or, if you need to prep for 4 people, they offer a larger version for only $40 per shipment…. At $10 per person, this really is awesome.

image

But, the most important thing, besides the money and shipping, is the food: quality, flavor, ingredients and recipe cards! Previous recipes include Hanger Steak with Ratatouille and Arugula & Pine Nut Salad, and Tilapia Tacos with Cilantro Slaw and Guacamole. For mine, however, I received the ingredients and recipes to make a Goat Cheese and Cracker Appetizer, with Baked Lemon Chicken, Fingerling Potatoes and Broccolini! (recipe in link)

image

So now, onto the box and the food! My FAVORITE part of the delivery was that my box was labeled to “Princess Mackenzie Degen”, I had no idea it would be coming that way, and definitely made my mailman laugh, but it was a very clever addition and I like the royal mention.

image

You can see they put a ‘cooling case’ inside the brown box to try to keep the food as fresh as possible. I was a little worried about the chicken, as the ice packs sent with it were completely soft and warm, however it was still in good condition. I recommend to anyone expecting a delivery to make sure someone is home at your house/delivery location, because if the box sat until I got home from work, it could have cooked in the heat for a few hours.

imageimage

Everything else seemed to be in good condition- the lemons, basil and thyme all fresh, the goat cheese, olive oil and other packages sealed, crackers all in one piece, and cute packaging for the fingerling potatoes! The broccolini was a tad yellower than I’m used to, however it didn’t taste different than normal after cooking it.

image

I laid out all the ingredients so that you can see everything they sent, from packaged raw chicken, fresh potatoes and broccolini to fresh herbs, packaged spices. They thought of everything, so you don’t even need to use your own olive oil or salt.

image

Prepping was pretty easy: the chicken was almost fully cleaned, I just gave it a rinse and cut off a few small fatty bits (I’m just picky) and then worked on the marinade. I squeezed the fresh lemons and combined them with the designated olive oil and thyme. I normally eyeball measurements, but for this review I tried to stick to the guidelines! I then laid out the chicken and fingerling potatoes in a glass-baking dish, covered them in the marinade and put almost a whole bulb-worth of garlic (included) on them. Then, I added some salt and pepper as encouraged, and popped it into the oven to start cooking while I set up the other dishes!

image

I laid out the crackers on a dish, and tried to cut up the goat cheese into slices to put onto it. As many of you know, goat cheese has a super creamy, soft texture, so I ended up spreading most of it onto the crackers. Then I topped with chopped fresh basil, a dash of sea salt and the red peppercorns, and drizzled the olive oil over the top.

image

After taste testing, I definitely say that the basil and olive oil are a great addition, but the sea salt was definitely unnecessary. I would, instead, add the rough salt to the chicken and potato’s, or save for the broccolini. As with the peppercorns, I think if they were crushed up, they might be better than whole, and as a personal preference, I would add them to one of the other dishes. I had a few of the crackers as designated, and then updated them ‘my way.’ That means, I rolled half of the peppercorns off, added sliced fresh peaches on top and drizzled with a bit of honey and balsamic vinegar. Yum!

image

Then, I put a pot of water on to boil the broccolini in while the chicken continued to cook. I seasoned it with a dash of salt, and let it come to a boil. Then I added the fresh broccolini to the water and let it cook for about 5 minutes, and drained it. While it tasted good and would have been a ‘healthy choice’, I decided to give it a little more pizazz BY USING ONLY THE INGREDIENTS I WAS GIVEN. I heated up a small pan with some of the leftover olive oil and threw a few of the fresh garlic cloves to cook and soften up/brown, and then added the broccolini with a touch of salt and pepper to cook for just about 2 minutes. Delicious.

image

Finally, the chicken and potatoes were ready to come out! The chicken was cooked perfectly, and the potatoes just starting to break open, meaning they would be soft and delicious. I added a half of a chicken breast, a few fingerling potatoes and the broccolini to my plate and dove in for the official taste testing. The chicken, while cooked well needed an extra something…  either some hot pepper flakes, more herbs or a dry seasoning rub. It was like a mellow lemon-oil chicken flavor. I think if the garlic cloves were crushed up and the chicken marinade for 30 minutes, it would probably soak in that flavor.  The potatoes, in my opinion were perfect. For an extra ‘oomph’ you can add a little extra oil or butter to the potatoes once you cut into them.

image

All in all, PeachDish definitely is a great concept and included more than enough food for two people. Some constructive critisicm I have it that I think they need a dash more flavor/spices/herbs included in their recipes, and maybe revamp the recipes or change a few things up. I think because my entrée was so savory, I wanted something sweet or refreshing to start/finish with, which is why I added the peaches and honey to the goat cheese appetizer.

image

A plus in my book was that they threw in 3 Lady Finger cookies, which I was not at all expecting. They were yummy as is, but would be even better if they added a packet of ground coffee (enough for 2 people) to brew and serve with them, or a chocolate sauce or mascarpone/ricotta to spread on like a DIY Tiramisu.

I mentioned PeachDish to a few friends who loved the idea and overall concept (and oooh-ed and ahhh-ed at my pictures) however a few of them are vegetarians. I would love for them to come up with an option to choose a meatless meal if possible, so that I would invite one of them over for dinner and have everything I need accessible to cook for both of us!

What’s on my… August 14th *Spoiler Alert*

What’s on my…. Mind: So, there recently was a deal for 25% off a 6-month subscription to GlossyBox, so I cancelled my current monthly billing subscription, and then signed up for that! I also used Ebates, which got me $2.75 cash … Continue reading

My First Graze Box… a Love Story

image

When a chance for a Graze Snacking Subscription Box code came up, I jumped immediately! And not only did I sign up for one box.. but I got a little bit crazy and signed up for two! So, one ships to me once a month, and the other to Kevin’s house (where I unfortunately have to share with him…)

image

What exactly is Graze? It’s a subscription service that lets you customize your preferences online choosing: Trash it, Try it, Like it or Love it, which encourages what snacks are sent to you. Each week or month, based on your choosing and budget, they send them to you and you can always change your options for the next delivery! While you don’t 100% know what you’re going to get, you can definitely play with the options and try out awesome dried fruit blends, savory trail mixes and more.

image

The box arrives with an awesome photograph of a fig- all close up and personal on the inside of the cover. My stomach is already grumbling. Then I see my super awesome Welcome Card which not only says “Hey, Welcome, You’re Great” and so on, but also has cool stickers and customized tags!

And of course, the nutritional information! I’m big on eating healthy, natural and staying away from processed and artificial foods. So, I skimmed through the ingredients and took a quick calorie peek and then proceeded to actually check out my snacks!

image

My box came with HoneyComb FlapJacks, Apple Crumble, Smoky Gazpacho Dip and Pomodoro Rustichella mix; the perfect combination of sweet, salty and savory. Kevin’s box (not pictured as it was consumed in approximately 3.6 minutes) included the Summer Berry FlapJack, Scrumptious Blueberry Swirl (soooo good!), Lightly Toasted Pistachios and also, the Pomodoro Rustichella as well.

image

I can say off the bat that the Flapjacks are like a fresh, delicious granola chewy bar and I would definitely take them over a packaged pre-made granola bar; the Apple Crumble and Blueberry Swirl fruity mixes were just taste-bud mind blowing, hitting my craving for both sweets and fruit. The Pomodoro mix was dynamite and I was definitely happy it came in both boxes. My only ‘eh’ options were the Pistachios, as they were just very basic, and the Gazpacho Dip is a little odd at first, and takes a few dips to grow on you.

For $5 per week, every other week, or once a month, I am totally sticking with Graze. I’m updating my selections now for my next box, and I’m not even sure if I can wait another 3 weeks!

Allure Must Have Box ~ Fall 2013

image

So, the other day, this GIANT box… oh and I mean giant box, arrived at my house. Another notch on the ‘mailman thinks I’m crazy’ list, but hey- I was anxiously waiting for this box to arrive! So what is it? The Allure Fall Must-Haves box! Allure picked out the best of the best beauty, body, hair and makeup products and put them for sale at an awesome price of $39.99 (came out to $55 after tax and shipping). And I can definitely say this was over $55 worth of products… plus it sold out in 10 minutes!

image

So, I organized the products into a few categories to make it easier to read and identify (rather than 23 individual pictures). So, here are my Nail Products. I received a Sally Hanson Salon Manicure Cuticle Eraser & Balm, which is supposed to remove dry cuticles and moisturize your nail beds pre-polish. Next to that is another Sally Hanson product the Salon Effects Nail Polish Strips in Laced Up, a grey-and-white pattern. The dark Purple polish (hard to tell the color from the camera lighting) by Sation is a great deep fall color, called Winey Happy People. Last but not least, we have the Sally Hanson Complete Salon Manicure in Mermaids Tail. I am so pumped to try out this color, even though I’m not a huge glitter fanatic.

image

Next, we have the Body Prep and Grooming Products. Once again, we have a lot of Sally Hansen, but I don’t hate it! Going clockwise, we have Cetaphil DailyAdvance Lotion Ultra Hydrating. While it’s not very glamorous it’s apparently really hydrating and long-lasting. Next, we have Skintimate SkinTherapy Sensitive Skin Shave Gel, which is a brand I’m already a big fan of. This one combines shave gel with lotion for a totally smooth shave. For parts you don’t want to shave, there is the Sally Hansen Ouch-Relief Wax Strip Kit. I’m a little scared to actually use it myself, so I may force/encourage one of my friends to rip the strips off. Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs is basically makeup for your legs. I’ve used the aerosol spray before, but I usually choose gradual self-tanners, as they last longer than a few hours. Then, to go with the shave gel and lotion is a Schick Hydro Silk razor! Comparable to Venus and Gillette, this is a great razor with 5 blades and cushions.

image

Now, Haircare! There are a ton for this group… the general idea seems to be heat protection, smoothing and strengthening, and intense moisture.

We’ll start with the GK Hair Oil to protect against humidity and fight frizz, and next to that is KMS California Hairstay anti-humidity seal weatherproofing formula and heat protection. Goldwell StyeSign Magic Finish Spray is the biggest bottle, full of a radiant gloss hairspray to protect and enhance shine. Redken (great brand!) All Soft Argan-6 Oil for silky softness when you’re hair feels dry or weak, and their Redken Satinwear 02 Prepping Blow-Dry Lotion is for a stress-free blowdry and heat-protection. Finally, we have the hair masks: Carol’s Daughter Monoi Reparing Hair Mask is used for less breakage and to undo damage, and Neutrogena Triple Moisture Deep Recovery Hair Mask is for moisture and protecting against breakage.

I’m definitely using alllll of these products!

image

Now, onto the Face and Makeup Products. A few I’ve tried before, and some are brand new to me! Simple Hydrating Light Moisturizer is a lightweight day-to-day lotion, made for 12-hour lasting usage. I’ve been using the Neutrogena brand for a long time, and so I’m always open to acne-fighting products. This Oil-Free Acne Wash is not too strong, and perfect for clearing pores and eliminating oil. There is also a Neutrogena Rapid Tone Repair Night Moisturizer, a retinol formula with vitamin C to even out discoloration and balance your skin. Pixi Eye Bright Liner is a whitening and brightening liner supposed to be used inside your eyes to make them look bigger and more awake. Burt’s Bees Revitalizing Lip Balm with Blueberry and Dark Chocolate is a whole new level of Burt’s Bees! I’ve used their menthol products and fruity flavors, and so this antioxidant blend sounds great. Redermic R Eyes is a Dermological Anti-Aging Eye Corrector, a retinol and caffeine formula to fight crows feet and wrinkles. RoC Multi Correxion Nourish Stress Repair Eye Cream is a nourishing eye cream to reduce signs on aging and stress. Plus, they threw in a free sample!

So, woah! Those were a lot of products! Did anyone else purchase this amazing box of goodies? I can only imagine what their Winter collection will feature!

xo, Kenzie

Peckish ~ August 2013

SkoshBox ~ August 2013

SkoshBox is unlike any other box I’ve received so far… it’s a combination of a food/snacking box and a Japanese culture box! They mix the two worlds, but sending japan-made and branded snacks and candies throughout the US for you … Continue reading
