Boxycharm ~ October 2014

Boxycharm is one of my favorite beauty subscription boxes at the moment, and based on the theme and spoilers, I was more than anxious for it to arrive so I could check it out. The theme of this month was “Bewitched“, which makes sense seeing as it is October and Halloween is a day away!

Coastal Scents Eclipse Concealer Palette ($19.95)

I’m 50-50 when it comes to Coastal Scents: I’m not huge on their blush and picky with eyeshadow colors (referring to Coastal Scents products I’ve received in the past), however many beauty fanatics rave about them as a dupe for more expensive brands and items. This palette is a concealing/contouring kit, fitted with different color concealers and creams with medium coverage. The colors like purple and green are meant to balance out skin tone issues like redness and undereye darkness, while the colors are meant to conceal, highlight and shadow skin. It’s perfect because it can be used daily, for occasions and even for Halloween! This may be my favorite item in the box…

Be a Bombshell Cosmetics Eyeshadow in Tempted ($14)

While I don’t like the Be a Bombshell Mascara, due to the gasoline-like smell and angry reviews from bloggers from a previous Ipsy bag, I do like their lip products and so I decided to give this eyeshadow a try. Luckily, it’s a super simple, neutral beige brown with a hint of shimmer, so it’s perfect for daily use, instead of a bright purple or smokey eye black.

CULT/COMMERCE X BoxyCharm Shady Collection ($21)

This custom product/brand is hard to find background info on as I feel as though it was custom made for this months Boxycharm. There’s a steel grey/black shade and a shimmery dark royal purple shade which can either be worn separately or paired togther. Definitely perfect Halloween/Fall colors! While I did experience the “tough” rough bristles of the brush which many people complained about, (Boxycharm said they purposely were stiff in order to ensure good shipping and no spilling) it soon softened up and I was able to use the nail polishes. Quality wise, they definitely do not compare to my higher end and 5-free nail polishes. However, the colors are cute, so I’ll find use for them here and there.

Palmetto Derma Collagen Booster and Restoration Serum ($48)

This is a serum to fight against aging, fine lines and wrinkles by creating youthful, glowing skin. It contains vitamin C and hyaluronic acid so those are a plus in my opinion, however I have not found many reviews/much info on the product. I really like the packaging on the bottle and because I’m a serum and oil fanatic, I was excited to receive this product.

Starlooks Ultra Gem Pencil in Ultra Violet ($14)

Normally, I’m skeptical when it comes to eyeliner: the color, the quality, the long-lasting ability… especially if it has glitter or shimmer in it. However, this Starlooks pencil is a beautiful light purple-ish color with shimmer and while the color seems odd from afar, it’s perfect for my skin tone and eye color!

For a box that costs only $21, the October Boxycharm definitely had a value of over $100! While I was not a fan of the formula/brushes of the nail polish and don’t really need any more eyeshadows, I was excited for the contouring palette, collagen boosting serum and my beautiful new purple eyeliner pencil! I think it really was the luck of the draw that I got colors that work well with my skin and brands I either already like or are excited to try out. I definitely understand the backlash on the nail polishes and based on reviews by others, that they’re sick of getting eyeliner and lipliners, as I am a bit too, but all in all, I would consider this a fairly good box. I like the variety of items even if I won’t necessarily be using them all.

Next month, I’m really hoping for a beautiful burgundy, deep red or purple lipstick, a nice fall-scented face mask like pumpkin or apple, and a hair styling product like a leave-in treatment or bb cream for hair! I always like seeing a variety of items and brands, so fingers crossed!
